Textured Coatings Example

This property had previously been coated in resin based coating, the entire property had to be transformed into one seamless property. Difficult pre-rendered sections were rendered with HPX polymer fibre base coats, the render was then primed and high pressure coated in ultra white very fine textured Pliolite based coating

Unpainted pebbledash has to be prepared differently to that of painted pebbledash or render.
The first stage of the very important preparatory work is that of high pressure water jetting this will remove surface dirt and lichen it will also indicate any loose defective render-backing coat.
The next stage would be to hammer test the areas and remove and repair any blown areas also large cracks would be cut back and filled with latex modified mortar.
The next stage would be to apply the bio wash this is left on the walls and remains active killing any organic growth.
Next the windows quoins, stone headers above the windows, would be carefully masked.
After masking we need to achieve a few objectives we have to stabilise any loose pebble on the surface, seal and stabilise and make good any powdery backing render and dub out the surface to accept the textured coating.
Some firms recommend slushing the surface with thinned down textured paint,
(Usually thinned down slops from other jobs) this is not the proper way to undertake this work as you do not effectively glue the pebble on the wall or stabilise the surface.
The other way to undertake the work would be to strip the surface or ‘shovel back’ the loose pebble and apply a two coat render but this method would be very costly and would not make any difference to the performance of the system, it would just look different.
The most suitable and cost effective way to undertake this stage is to ‘Bag’ coat the surface this is a strong slurry coat containing sand, cement and SBR latex which is added to the gauging water this is mixed to a thick cream consistency the slurry coat is brushed and worked deep into the surface. Once dry this creates a very solid waterproof surface all pebbles are literally welded to the wall the other advantage of this treatment is that you do not change the texture of the surface too significantly, it does have to be dubbed out slightly as you will not get proper coverage (you will get pock and crater marks etc).
To give you an idea on the viscosity of Wall2Wall fine and standard texture the coating is that thick it can be trowel applied, which is why the dash needs dubbing out slightly
We then remove the masking tape and paper to avoid seepage.
Next stage is to re mask, then we apply a resin based smooth primer coat usually by roller, this primer penetrates into the ‘Bag’ coat and further stabilises any surface sand particles.
Once dry we can then high-pressure spray the Wall2Wall onto the surface.
Smooth areas of render that are to be treated with Wall2Wall Smooth Pliolite based coating are not treated with the latex slurry coat although if the surface is friable it will be treated as above (without the latex cement slurry coat) and primed.

Spalling or weathered brick work can also be treated in the same way saving the cost of rendering it also preserves the outline and pattern of the brick which can look attractive.
